چکیده

High cycle fatigue has become the leading cause of failure in gas turbine engine blades in recent years [1]. The majority of these failures were associated with surface damage such as foreign object damage (FOD). Therefore, the ability of a material to resist impact damage and the subsequent fatigue propagation of any cracks that may result has become a crucial design consideration. Substantial research has been conducted on the effects of simulated FOD in conventional turbine blade materials where the formation of cracks at the impact site was not a common occurrence [2,3,4]. However, impacts of more brittle materials, such as -TiAl, would likely result in the formation of cracks. Steif et al [5] have examined the formation of cracks associated with impacts in several TiAl-based alloys. The effects of ballistic impacts on the fatigue behavior of a Ti-48Al-2Nb-2Cr -TiAl alloy were examined by Lerch et al [6]. Fatigue strength was correlated with a somewhat arbitrary crack length with some success; however, no correlation with the long-crack fatigue threshold was made. The use of a fatigue threshold limit may be necessary for design of turbine blades given the limited fatigue crack growth resistance exhibited by -TiAl. The present study investigates the reduction in elevated temperature fatigue strength of a Ti-46.8Al 2.1Nb-1.1Mn-0.1Si-1.4B alloy caused by simulated foreign object damage. This work is part of a larger effort to support the transition of -TiAl to industrially relevant gas turbine engine applications.

ROOM TEMPERATURE FATIGUE RESPONSE OF -TiAl TO IMPACT DAMAGE

Gamma based titanium aluminides have received considerable attention recently as candidate materials in gas turbine applications, particularly low pressure turbine blades (1–3). Their low density and high specific stiffness, result in potentially significant weight savings in structures such as gas turbine engines if substituted for current materials. Two -TiAl microstructures are predominatel...

In this research, the Planetary mill was used for mechanical alloying (MA) of Ti and Alpowder mixture with equal at% (Ti50Al50). The effect of various factors, such as process control agent(PCA), speed of rotation of vial and ball-to-powder weight ratio, on process were studied and the bestcondition to synthesis the alloy was determined. Study on X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showedthat at p...

Fatigue Failure Analyses on a Ti-45Al-8Nb-0.2W-0.2B-0.1Y Alloy at Different Temperatures

The fatigue micro crack initiation and propagation tests of a TiAl alloy with 8% Nb content were carried out by using scanning electron microscopy in situ technology at room temperature and at 750 C. These results indicated that the fatigue micro crack initiation was mainly caused by the stress concentration at room temperature, but at an elevated temperature (750 C) the multi-cracks were cau...

Evaluation of a Threshold-based Model of the Elevated- Temperature Fatigue of Impact-Damaged -TiAl

Step-loading fatigue tests have been conducted on two -TiAl alloys with differing microstructures following quasi-static indentations intended to simulate assembly-related impact damage to lowpressure turbine blades. Fatigue tests were conducted at 600 C using computer-controlled servohydrau lic loading at a frequency of 20 Hz. Reasonably good agreement was achieved between the fatigue data...
